Midnight On New Year’s Eve: Take a Hike!

The first walk of the year for the American Volksport Association is right here in Fredericksburg, the annual Midnight Walk.  When I first moved here my dad, Bob Deming, was president of the local Volksport club and I did a lot of events with him.  This was the first club in the US, brought by none other than Kenn Knopp.  The walk starts at 11 PM on New Year’s Eve at the St Joseph’s Halle.  I’ll see you there!

New Series: Hill Country Artist

My editors at Texas Hill Country.com seem to be OK with whatever I write (so far) and I am adding to my Fredericksburg Insider column with a new one featuring local artists.  I sell my novels at Artisans a Texas Gallery on West Main Street in Fredericksburg, so I know a lot of artistically talented people.  The first story is about my friend Ira Kennedy; the more I see of his work, the more I like it.  He is a quiet, gentle, and deeply spiritual man, and his paintings reflect his artists journey.

Fredericksburg Singing Christmas Tree?

This is my weekly column.  Weekly when I remember to write it.  I asked Phil Houseal about writing a weekly column, which he has done for many years with the local newspaper, the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post.  He said, “Ask me again in 10 years.”

Fredericksburg Insider: Church to Church Walk

I sort of have a weekly column on the Texas Hill Country website, the current post is about one of my favorite parts of Fredericksburg life – the annual Church to Church Walk.  I don’t know how far back this tradition goes – there don’t seem to be any records – but I have spoken to people who remember it at least from 1983.  If you know when this started I would like to update the post with that info.  The numbers of participants at one point was over 300, but that dropped and now may be in the 100-150 range.  You can start at Zion and do the whole walk or just go to one particular church, but however you do it, this is one of the things which makes Fredericksburg special.  Programs at each church are short and inspirational.  Other community churches too far away to be included in the walk have a part in in the program; for example, the Methodist Church choir presents at Bethany Lutheran.

Deecmber 13, 6:00 PM, beginning at Zion – I’ll be looking for you.
